RED DEER – This month’s Alumni Spotlight focuses on Conyr Hellyer, formerly of the Okotoks Oilers Athletic Association and currently of the AJHL’s Okotoks Oilers.
Conyr first stepped on the ice at the age of four when his father put him out there. He enjoyed it right from the start and would later start his journey through minor hockey. As he went through school, hockey wasn’t the only sport he participated in, as he also played baseball, basketball, volleyball, and badminton.
Okotoks Minor Hockey was the home for Conyr as he grew up. Starting from Initiation, he would stick through the organization all the way through until U18 AAA in 2020-21. The following season, he began his Junior A career with his hometown Okotoks Oilers. Conyr is currently in his second season with the Oilers where he has 54 points through 41 games. Next season, Conyr has committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils to continue his hockey career.
“My favourite thing about hockey is being part of a team with a great group of guys and enjoying those nail-biting games that come down to final minute,” said Conyr.
In December 2022, Conyr was fortunate enough to be selected to play for Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge in Cornwall, ON. That is an opportunity that he will cherish forever, as nothing compares to the feeling of representing your country in hockey.
Conyr’s favourite memory of playing hockey in Alberta is from when he got to play in the 2019 Alberta Cup. As he got into the elite levels of hockey, the increased pace of the game helped prepare him for what to expect at the Junior level.
